Silves

The former capital of Algarve. Thanks to its inland location, Silves has largely remained authentic to this day. The cobbled and sloped streets lined with whitewashed houses make for lovely strolling. In the early afternoon, the town is nearly deserted, and you will have the streets to yourself. Below the town, the Arada river meanders past. Under Moorish rule, it was said that Silves surpassed Lisbon in beauty and was given the name ‘Baghdad of the West’. Nowadays, little of that time remains, except for the red castle towering over the town. From the castle, you can enjoy some magnificent views over Silves and the surrounding area.
