WALKING AND HIKING

The São Brás de Alportel region (between the coast and Serra) lends itself to various walks. From walks in the Rio Formosa, a unique nature reserve featuring approximately 18,000 hectares of lagoons and a wealth of flora and fauna, to walks in the hills north of Sao Bras, amid cork and olive groves, along small roads, through picturesque villages, the authentic Algarve region where people live and enjoy what nature gives them. There are various marked trails in the region.

For more adventurous travellers, there is the Via Algarviana, a trail more than 300 km long that crosses the Algarve region from east (Alcoutim) to west (Cabo Sao Vicente) and runs through São Brás de Alportel.

The Via Algarviana takes hikers through the Barrocal and the Serra, across rivers and hills, along old windmills, springs and chapels that all accentuate the archaeological and historical riches of this region.
